& lurking near the black marble of Italian headstones

shining back at the bright little windows of the local

do-it-yourself shops in the rising morning

like a sickness that imprisons the heart in a fettered glove

& now I recognize your great talent as a member of the

human race as the peasant offers me the plastic salt-box

& I look around for the snuff of the father

painted in green & embroidered in my vest

as a text for my meditations

outside the window the trees move in the night

your grand desire rises in my throat & my heart

pulses on into its thirty-sixth year like an indifferent

steam-engine while milky tea embalms the organ

a woman feels very cold around the buttocks

once in a while & yet your laugh brings light to me

cause you're the first good man I've found

pressing the glossy black embellishments to the hand

under the gentle curtain imagery of the gasfire & the

dusty smell of old red velvet cinema seats

but still this hanging over

of the female in the man

means maybe

rather than

& that's not the end but a beginning like when

you can't turn the key any further in the sardine can

& all along the edge of the skyline

the last green cringe of daylight

drops like a plate to the ground
